IBS that causes increased diarrhea is often called IBS-D. If you have IBS-D, you have belly pain and other IBS symptoms plus frequent bowel movements. Your stool might be loose, though not always. You also might have sudden urges to use the bathroom.

While there isn’t a cure for IBS-D, there are treatments that can improve the quality of your life and help you feel better.

The main bowel habit can change over time. In addition, symptom occurrence can fluctuate over time. There can be periods when symptoms flare-up, as well as periods when they diminish or, disappear. Diarrhea is defined as having loose, watery stools for more than 3 times per day. IBS-D can usually be thought of as:

• Increased frequency of stool

• Loose and watery stools

• A feeling of being unable to completely empty during a bowel movement
